So the woman has it in her head it’s time to part ways with her 2012 Malibu. I agree so long as she keeps payments in the same range as she is now. She bought it new and it now has just under 40k miles and actually owes less than it’s worth. so sweet maybe get some trade in with it. The thing is she’s got me checking out the market for her. Price range would be 20 to 23k.
So far I’m completely unimpressed with every midsize in this range. I don;t under stand why every company seems to insist on pushing options soo high on the price for mid sizes and I really don’t see much difference in any of the cars. you get 180 to 190 hp 4cyl, radio with aux port and it seems mostly only can choose CVT’s. who the fuck wants to buy these? I’m not impressed. for the money I’d rather put her in a 3 year old CTS or something... Ugh..

Mazda6?
It’s by far the most fun, it’s well-appointed and it can come with a manual... or a six-speed auto (non-CVT, thank god).
It also looks amazingly better than everything else in its segment.

It’s called inflation I guess. I’d go used if I were you. Maybe CPO or carmax warranty.

Uh the segment below it full of Corollas, sentras and other depressingly bland cars..

This midsize happens to come with this:

Midsize sedans and midsize crossovers — a little something for everyone, but nothing much for anyone specifically.
But on a personal note: Sedans can all die in a fire, as far as I’m concerned.

Must agree. I’ve had mine for four months today and it’s great. Plenty of power (please test drive one before deciding it doesn’t have enough power), great looks and features, plenty of room, good MPG ratings, good safety ratings, etc. I love it.
It has 184 hp from the 2.5 SkyActiv four and literally all car people say that's not enough. But, in day-to-day living, it's more than enough. I never have a lack of power feel when driving this car. It passes and accelerates with ease and it actually has one of the quickest 0-60 times in the 4-cylinder automatic sedan segment. (7.0 seconds flat)

if you buy the almost 30k v6 model, yes it does. other wise no looks like only CVT.

The one pictured is the Sport; it only costs $25k new, and used ones are running for around $19k.

what?! no, kill the cross over! they are stupid. they offer less cargo space a lot of time than their sedan counter parts. are often only FWD any ways and usually look like stupid cartoonist things.

What about the Optima?
Starts at about 24k CAD, which amounts to about 17k USD. Don’t know what the exact price is in the states as Kia’s site won’t let me get onto the US version. Available with a turbo 1.6, a turbo 2.0, and an N/A 2.4. The 1.6 turbo also comes with a 7-speed dual clutch, rest of the engines have a 6-speed automatic as the manual was dropped in 2013.

Accord V6 Sedan =/ manny tranny
Accord I4 Sedan = manny tranny
Reviews state the Accord Sport Sedan is more enjoyable (and quicker) than the 2.4L Acura ILX.

yeah, I would rather go CPO or Carmax my self. but she likes new, new. She’s only ever bought new. I’m hoping to convince her to go used. But in her eyes any new car is better than an older.I think once I get to to test drive some nicer used cars in her price range maybe I can convert her. I’m only really down with her getting out of the Malibu she has now because it still has older engine and 4 spd transmission. doesn’t move well and get’s shitty MPG.

It’s only depressing because you’re shopping in total base model territory. Though a base Fusion with the S appearance package wouldn’t be too bad if you’re willing to ignore the almost certain interior built quality issues it’ll have. The 2.5 is actually a decently peppy engine, and I experienced it in a Transhit Connect.

It is pretty depressing. All anyone cares about is the options these days in that segment not the drivetrain.

huh, I’ll have to double check them. The website made it seem like only the V6 got anything other than a CVT.

If it’s a 2012 it has a 6-speed auto. I think it was in 2010 when they made it where every engine and trim level got the 6-speed instead of just the LTZ and V6 models.

My dad has a 2014 Kia Optima. It’s a really nice car. It’s got bluetooth, touchscreen, power driver’s seat, and it was only $20k on sale.

The V6 gets an actual 6spd automatic transmission. I don’t think it gets the CVT.

I have a Mazda 6 as well, same color and everything as mazda616. I back up everything he says, the only thing is that the tires are only ok in snow. I have gotten stuck a couple times in snow that my old Grand Prix could truck through.

Get better snow tires?
The one I had was on X-Ice and went through blizzards without ever slowing down.
But yeah, this is a problem with modern cars: covered undertray+ low clearance+low profile= less-than-amazing deep-snow performance.

I just avoid going through deep snow now instead of paying $800+ for new rims and snow tires.

What about the Fusion? With the refreshed one coming out soon, I imagine you can get a pretty decent deal on a leftover, no?

Not exactly midsize but a quick autotrader search showed me 2013-2014 Cadillac ATSs under $24k fresh off of a few leases.

her dad hates ford, she wont buy one. I try to make her change her mind, nope. I should note a lot of her family worked at GM. strange she has no feeling about any other brand though. and the fusion can be had in awd i think. that would be nice.

yeah Been eye balling those. it’s more suited to her too, the CTS would be a touch too big. but it’s also really pushing our budget.

US model Accord LX is standard with a 6-speed manual. The Accord Sport is also standard with a 6-speed manual.

$23k will get you into a remaining 2015 VW Passat TSI Limited. We have one and I love it. Also, you might be able to find a CPO 2013 BMW 320i or 328i for that price. Maybe even a 2014 320i.

pass on the passat, but didn’t think about cpo 3 series. Only issue is if it’s not FWD it needs to be AWD. hills and winter make it a bit impractical. I mean not this year, woohoo, how ever this is not the norm. As the main car for the house a RWD car would be a bad idea. wonder what a 3 series CPO with x drive runs... hmmm away I go!

Ah, that explains your dilemma. I was about to suggest the fusion as well. That Sport model almost looks too good to be true
